"Me and Subculture"

Essentially, subculture is a subdivision of mainstream culture; it may also be called non-mainstream culture. Back in 2021, when I was a student in high school, my classmate once told me, "Hey, look at this subculture style, I think you could try it, it’s so cool! " I took notice of that word for the first time and was really curiosu about it. So, I went online to research this type of style and related materials. Afterward, I began experimenting once, twice, and then more.

Later, I started participating in subculture fashion shows and met many friends, gradually becoming part of this community.

Before this, I was following the sweet style, but it felt very ordinary. Following conventional and mainstream styles was too boring. I was an introverted child in middle school, but after entering high school, I slowly opened up. Now, subculture exploration has become my hobby, which makes me happy and allows me to express myself. The minute I go outside with this kind of outfit, I feel that my mentality is very different from ordinary people. The people on the street seldom blame me; they just glance at me. Even if he says something critical, I will just listen; it doesn't affect me. I would not argue with anybody because that is his understanding of me. As the saying goes, "A hundred people have a hundred different interpretations of Hamlet." In my opinion, everybody thinks differently, and all that matters is that I’m happy.

No overthinking, no nonsense. Unlike traditional Cosplay, subculture feels more like "cosplaying yourself." Every time I get ready with some interesting makeup or outfit, I feel like a new version is unlocked. Seeing a different side of me makes me excited, happy, and confident. My family does not oppose it; my mom is super supportive, and my friends also love my style. Sometimes at school, I usually got compliments as I walked along the hallways.

This community also allowed me to meet many new friends and made my usual life seem extraordinary. Nowadays, every time I go out, I would meet a friend that I got acquainted with at the fashion show. We developed a good relationship, and every time before going out, I would say, "What are you wearing today? Should I help you coordinate your outfit?" The atmosphere in this circle feels perfect for me: very comfortable and enjoyable.
